Sunday AM: Mission SpinPossible — Spinning for Socks with Cheviot with Michael Kelson
No longer available
Instructor: Michael Kelson
How do we spin a perfect sock yarn? Spinning for socks, like socks themselves, is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. We will discuss how to evaluate twist, ply, and discuss different ply structures.
In addition to techniques for spinning for socks, this class will be a fiber exploration!
Down and Down-like fibers can be wonderful for socks. In this class, we’ll take a close look at Cheviot. We’ll spin Cheviot top, discuss the characteristics of the fiber and why it might be a good choice for socks, and we’ll practice spinning a special custom sock-yarn blend featuring Cheviot.
Skill Level: Successful students will have a good working relationship with their spinning wheels, be able to spin a consistent single, and have some experience plying and finishing yarn.
- A spinning wheel in good working condition with extra bobbins, lazy kate (if you have one)
- Any additional tools you like to use (hand cards, mini-combs), any particular fiber you would like to practice with
- Materials for taking notes
- Materials fee of $15 covers provided fiber
